There are many castles for a day trip Blair Castle at Blair Atholl (www.blair-castle.co.uk) , Glamis Castle in Forfar (www.glamis-castle.co.uk), and Scone Palace (www.scone-palace.co.uk) on the outskirts of Perth are but to name a few. Easy access to the Scottish highlands, Croftweit provides excellent accommodation for a Scottish romantic break or a holiday home for the family. FISHING FOR FUN! If you wish to have a fishing holiday in Scotland, we can offer fishing on the doorstep, the River Earn is just down the road. Fishing is available on various Lochs and Rivers close by. So whether it is Salmon, Trout or Graying that you are after, Crieff is well situated in the centre of Perthshire - a fishermans mecca. For the beginners and children of all ages, there is Drummond Trout Farm and Fishery www.drummondtroutfarm.co.uk – guaranteed to catch something. WALKING AND RUNNING John, the owner of Croftweit Apartments, is a keen runner, and is happy to show you all the great running routes in Crieff and the surrounding hills. The ascent is an easy walk beside the beautiful Loch Turret followed by a short, steep scramble to the summit of Ben Chonzie. You can enjoy the beautiful walk down the other side to Comrie, stopping off for some refreshments in the Royal Hotel, and hopping on the bus back to Crieff. Lady Mary’s Walk is a glorious walk around the River Earn, only half mile from Croftweit, check this website out for other local walks http://www.strathearn.com/op/walking.htm FAMILY ACTIVITIES If you are coming to Croftweit with younger children you will find plenty of things to do as a family. Within a short drive there is a wildlife centre, a safari and leisure park and a farmlife centre. WHISKY TRAIL If whisky appeals to your taste then you will not have to go very far to find it! Glenturret Distillery (Scotland's oldest) is within easy walking of Croftweit Apartments. A little further afield, in the hills above Pitlochry you will find Edradour Distillery (picture opposite) which carries the title of Scotland's smallest distillery. At Aberfeldy, where the Black Watch Regiment was first raised in 1739, you will find the Aberfeldy Distillery - opened in 1898 by John Dewar & Sons. The row of oak trees by the distillery was planted to celebrate Queen Victoria's Jubilee. HISTORIC INTEREST There are so many interesting Castles, Stately Homes and other places to visit in the area, the problem will be deciding how many you have time for! In Perthshire you will find a host of pretty villages, linked by glorious scenery and breathtaking views. Pitlochry, so beloved of Queen Victoria, Killiecrankie and the 'Soldier's Leap', Blair Atholl with its 'fairytale' Castle (home to the UK's only private army), Dunkeld with its historic cathedral and picturesque 'Little Houses' (in the care of the National Trust for Scotland), Fortingall with its pretty thatched roof houses and 2000 year old yew tree, Innerpeffray, home to the oldest free lending library in the country (founded 1680) and Balquhidder, last resting place of 'Rob Roy' MacGregor. Travelling out with Perthshire there is Edinburgh Castle, Loch Leven Castle (a unique small castle on an island where Mary, Queen of Scots endured nearly a year of imprisonment) amd nearby Ardoch, a fascinating Roman fort site.
